DOJ Launches Probe into TV Networks Over Trump Press Pool Coverage : The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched an investigation into several major TV networks. These networks had briefly halted coverage of White House events in support of CNN. The issue arose after President Donald Trump decided to bar CNN and two other media outlets from the White House.
In a statement, the Department of Justice said it is investigating whether the TV networks violated the law by acting in concert to halt coverage. According to the department, if business entities collude to boycott an activity, it could constitute a violation of the Sherman Act.
This investigation could further escalate the ongoing dispute between the Trump administration and the media. The White House TV press pool comprises five major networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News, and CNN. These networks also share video recordings of White House events with other news organizations.
On September 21, the TV press pool decided to suspend coverage temporarily. The head of the press pool stated in an email that this step was taken because the White House had prevented CNN from fulfilling its designated duties within the press pool.
However, the TV networks later resumed coverage of White House events. The Department of Justice is now examining whether the networks’ collective decision to halt coverage was unlawful.
On September 18, Trump had announced a ban on CNN, MSNBC, and Politico from entering the White House complex. He had expressed displeasure with the reporting by these media outlets. Subsequently, these organizations filed a lawsuit.
The media outlets argue that the White House’s decision infringes upon their rights to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. A legal battle over the matter is currently underway.
This investigation could impact the relationship between the US government and media organizations. It will become clear after the investigation is completed whether or not further legal action will be taken against the TV network.
